This NY State Co-Champion Bur Oak is known as the Torture Tree. The tree is a historic landmark, the site at which 2 soldiers from General Sullivan’s Campaign during the Revolutionary War, were killed by Native Americans. The soldiers are said to have been disemboweled and forced to walk themselves around the tree until death. The tree is likely 275 years or more in age.

This remarkable Eastern Cottonwood is considered as of 2022 to be the largest tree in New York State. It sits on the edge of a farmers field in close proximity to a stream which offers it ample water. It is relatively healthy except for the central lead limb which was struck by lightning according to the property owner about 15 years ago. It likely lost some height at that time but has continued to grown in girth.
